Ralph- In this part of the story, Ralph and Simon join the hunters to catch the so called "beast". The main reason why Ralph wants to catch the beast is because he wants to prove to the younger children in the group that there are no monsters out to hunt in the night. When Jack asks if Ralph would like to join the hunters for a hunt, Ralph agrees. Mainly because he wants to regain his position within the group. The author doesn't make any further development in Ralph. He sticks with Ralph being a good leader and instructing the other boys. Even though the other boys are disobeying him, Ralph continues to try and give them orders to follow to maintain proper order.

Jack- The Author doesn't make any further development in this character as he is maintains his personality as before. However things have changed and now all the boys in the hunting group now listen to Jack and less to Ralph.

Simon- Simon shows some responsibility and bravery in this chapter when he offers to go back to Piggy and the younger children and tell them that they would be late as they had gone to look for the beast. This tells us that even though it was at night and a lot of the boys were looking for the beast, Simon was ready to go back to the beach and tell Piggy that they would be late.

Theme- In the fewer chapters the reader might get a feeling that the relationship between Piggy and Ralph might be improving and they might be working well again together. However things don't seem to improve as Ralph being leader still has no effect on the other boys in the hunting group.

Chapter 6

Ralph- Again in this chapter Ralph shows the best of his leadership qualities by helping the younger children. He carries them to the shelter where the boys were sleeping. As he also went of to sleep, he was awoken by the twins who said that they were assaulted by some beast. As he set out to through the cave leading the way alone he was joined by Jack. Through the way the other boys started fooling around and after a while of instructions they stopped listening to Ralph.

Jack- After seeing Ralph go alone into the cave to find the "beast", Jack decides to join him. This could be an action of bravery where he might want to show the other boys that he is not scared of any monsters.

Theme- In this chapter the reader can really see how many of the boys are turning against Ralph and disobeying him. No only disobeying him just not taking instructions from him anymore. They are not worried about surviving and if they were worried about getting rescued from the island then they would take instructions more seriously.

Chapter 5

Ralph- In this chapter Ralph hosts a meeting with the whole group. In it, Ralph confronts and tells Jack and his hunters of what an awful job they are doing at getting drinking water, keeping up the signal and even keeping up to the designated toilet area. Not only the hunters but also all the other boys in the group. After getting a response where all the boys except Piggy and Simon, leave the meeting and walk away to enjoy their feast, Ralph feels like giving up his leadership role. Piggy then tells Ralph that the whole group would need his advice on how to do things around the island. This shows the frustration Ralph is going through and how much he is trying for everyone to listen to orders and go back in to order.

Jack- At this point the reader can clearly see that Jack's character has changes since the first time the reader read about him. For instance when Ralph hosts the meeting and informs Jack about his lack in leadership, Jack doesn't accept it he just walks away chanting the hunters "song".

Theme- At this point things seem to have gone out of control and the leadership seems to have been delegated to Jack. All the boys feel that Jack is right and now seem to follow him. Not knowing that they could have been rescued by now. From this Ralph feels like giving up his leadership but is stopped by Piggy and Simon.

Chapter 4

Ralph- In this chapter Ralph is shown as a leader who is losing faith in all his juniors. He finally see's a ship while talking to Piggy and turns to see the signal that Jack had supposedly prepared but is turned down as the flame went out. He then runs up to the signal to try and light a flame but its too late. He then see's Jack returning back to the beach with a pig, when he questions Jack about the signal Jack pretends not to hear causing a huge hatred between both the boys.
Jack- Jack's character now starts changing during this chapter in the story. His lack of communication and leadership left the boys from being rescued by a passing ship. His obsession with killing a pig drove him crazy by camouflaging himself to blend in with the jungle. He eventually caught the pig but since he did not order someone to watch the signal they had built it had costed the whole group from being rescued.
Piggy- Piggy at this point in the story is still being bullied and not listened to. He stays beside Ralph's side as if he were his lieutenant. When Piggy complains and confronts Jack about his hunters immaturity Jack slaps him shattering one of the glasses on his frame.

Theme- This is one of the most important chapters in the story as, in this chapter the lacking leadership qualities and the selfishness in Jack led to the boys not being rescued by a passing ship. Then in-turn when Ralph confronted Jack he wouldn't listen. Finally when Jack slapped Piggy and broke his glasses, it caused an outrage in Ralph and therefore he blew the trumpet-shell to host a meeting.

Chapter 3

Ralph- In this chapter, even more of Ralph's personality is displayed. The author shows Ralph as a person who wants everything he orders to be done and everything to go smoothly. For instance, when Jack returns from "hunting", Ralph finds out that Jack hadn't caught a single pig and questions him about it. The author also tells us that Ralph is worried about other problems that they have to deal with like getting shelter for all the boys in the group and even making the younger boys in the group comfortable and not suffer from some nightmares. He also gets angry when he realises that the only one helping him make tents for shelter is Simon. He realises that everyone else is enjoying themselves at the beach.
Jack-  Jack's character also changes a little bit in this chapter, the author writes Jack'c character to be more of a person who would give it one shot and give up the second. Like when Jack went to hunt a pig, he the pig ran away from him. Not bothering to chase the pig and try to kill it, Jack gets irritated and walks back to the beach. He also doesn't care about any other problems that Ralph is facing, when Ralph tries to tell him he turns him down and decides to go to play in the lagoon.
Simon- Simon's character is also brought out more in this chapter of the book. Simon is known to be a more of a person who would help around and cares for his survival and the survival of his other friends. He doesn't only help out Ralph in making the tents but he also goes and looks on the smaller, younger children.

Theme-
None of the boys are willing to help out Ralph in making sure the survival of the boys is taken care of. They might think that since Ralph is the leader of the group he might be able to finish all the work in making sure there is shelter for the whole group. Also the hunting group as well as Jack don't want to or don't feel like helping Ralph build shelter as well as take care of some of the problems he might have. This adds to the dislike of both the main characters of the book, Ralph and Jack.

Chapter 2

In this chapter Ralph uses the same shell to call the group of boys and host a meeting. In this meeting they talk about means of survival and how to attract attention and let people know that they are stranded on this island. Since the group of boys contained ages from about 6 to 12 there were many thought going on in the children's heads wether they would all eventually make it out of this island. In this chapter the author deeply emphasises on Ralph's leadership qualities and his ability to make decisions and make the whole group agree to his ideas. The author also makes the reader aware that Ralph does not make all the decisions on his own, he listens to other people and their thoughts on what should be done. Like in this chapter, Jack (the leader of the hunting group), lets Ralph know about the a pig that is stuck in the jungle, to this Ralph agrees that Jack should kill the animals in the jungle so that they have food to eat and survive on. The second decision Ralph makes is about them being stranded on the island. He makes Jack in charge for making a huge fire on a cliff where passing ships can see that they are in a state of emergency. Till this point, nobody wants to listen to Piggy's ideas and nobody really likes him except for Ralph. Everybody makes fun of his appearance and his nickname. Jack is one of the main boys who bullies Piggy the most. The other boys look at Jack and do the same to Piggy. This adds to the development of Jacks character of being more of a bully/

Chapter 1

In the first chapter of the book "Lord of The Flies", the author uses a wide range of vocabulary to describe the setting and one of the main characters the book. This in a way confuses the reader as to what is going on. He then starts to describe the characters in the book. He uses dialogues to make the reader know who and what kind of people the characters where. He starts to name the characters in the chapter, one's name is Ralph and another Piggy. Although Piggy is just the boy's nickname, he really hates to be called it. During a conversation on the beach Piggy notices a big shell in the shore of the beach. He then convinces Ralph to blow through a hole in it so that it could sound like a trumpet and attract the other lost boys on the island. From more development in this chapter we come to know about Ralph and Piggy, in the later stages of the chapter we come to know of more of Ralph's leadership qualities. We also come to know that once the smaller children come to know Ralph, they appoint him the leader of the whole group. However there was another candidate who was nominated and voted for as leader but unfortunately lost. His name was Jack. The author describes Jack to be an older boy and leading the boys choir in this big group. Ralph then makes a hunting group and appointed Jack as the leader. Then Jack and another boy named Simon move to explore the jungle.
